A Serial Killer: Hang 'Em High -- A fellow is accused of demon worship and there is evidence that he murdered over 100 children. I'm not so sure. He was associated with Joan of Arc and since they railroaded her, why not him? Who knows? I also talk about Thomas Edison, Tesla and the electric chair.
Montezuma Wags the Dog -- The Aztecs have a new Emperor and he's going to pull a fast one. He makes a deal with a minor king in his empire to start a fake war! This will make the Emperor look like a real tough guy and he will use this new image to vastly enlarge the Empire.

Gilles de Rais is a retired military commander who fought alongside Joan of Arc at the Siege of Orléans. He is also a playwright and has financed his own play. Unfortunately he recently kidnapped a clergyman after a heated dispute and after an investigation Gilles became the suspect in a series of child murders! He was accused of murdering over 100 children in a bizarre ritual of demon worship. He is tried before both a secular and religious court and found guilty. He is hanged by the neck. [1]

The whole business seems bizarre. Given in those days how evidence was distorted or simply made up to convict Joan of Arc, I am compelled to doubt this conviction as well. I'm not saying it didn't happen but I cannot be sure what happened except that he was convicted and hanged. Travesties of justice will continue into the 20th century when Sacco and Vanzetti are convicted due to manufactured evidence by the prosecution. Don't feel too sorry for them though. They were not very nice fellows. They were put to death with the modern electric chair designed by Thomas Edison. More Information (optional as always): Edison designed the Electric Chair to be strikingly painful and to discredit a poor but creative inventor named Nikola Tesla who had the gall to invent alternating current... the AC that comes out of your wall socket. Edison was promoting the more expensive (and lucrative for Edison) DC current for the home.[2] [3] [4] [5]

Montezuma Wags the Dog
After 14 years of strong rule, the Aztec Emperor "Obsidian Serpent" grows ill and passes away. He had saved the Aztecs from being absorbed into the surrounding tribes and built them into the major power of the region surrounding Lake Texacoco. With the passing of the old Emperor, the new Emperor must make it clear that he is no soft touch. Emperor Montezuma makes a deal with the King across the Lake to conduct a mock war in order to frighten the other tribes into believing that the new Emperor is even stronger than the old one. In fact, this sham is going to work so well that the Aztec Empire will double and quadruple in size by the end of Montezuma's reign in 1469. [6] [7] [8] [9]

The mock battle had advantages for the Emperor but what was the advantage to the King across the Lake? He was a distant relative but such connections are not reliable. The King and the Emperor became strong partners because of mutual self-interest. The Emperor needed to give the impression of power or the various tribes under his rule would rebel. The King across the Lake needed help with fighting off cross-border raiders. He was a king of a minor kingdom at the edge of the empire. By helping the Emperor become stronger, the Emperor was strong enough to help this minor king to bring stability to his own kingdom and expand the borders of the Empire. This partnership will also make possible the building of an aqueduct system. (FYI, I've not used the King's name because it's a mouthful and people primarily want to know more about Montezuma and not the guy who designed an aqueduct.) Montezuma the Elder will build his Empire surrounding what is present-day Mexico City.[10]
