History: The Year is 1515

I've uploaded year 1515 to the TSP Wiki...

Here are some one liners...

'Dare to be Wise': Free Schooling for Boys -- A free school for boys is set up by the local bishop. It will continue to teach boys into the modern day. I talk about the importance of teaching boys separately from girls.

Indian Slavery and the Failure of Free Towns -- A slave owner has a change of heart, frees his Indian slaves and becomes the first priest of the New World, but don't get too excited. He doesn't care much about African slaves and though he cares about the Indians, his efforts won't amount to much in the long run... great though they will be.

The First Founding of Havana, Cuba -- They put it on the south coast. It's modern day location is on the north coast. I also talk about the reestablishment of relations with Cuba.

'Dare to be Wise': Free Schooling for Boys

The Manchester Free Grammar School for Lancashire Boys offers free education in Latin and Greek to boys regardless of ability to pay. Founded by the local bishop and funded by the proceeds from his corn milling business, the goal is to prepare boys for ecclesiastical college or law. During the Age of Enlightenment the school will take on the motto "Dare to be wise." The building is located next to Manchester Cathedral and will remain free until the 18th century when a new building and boarding facilities will be paid for through fees. By the early 20th century the school will receive state-funds... small at first but growing and then returning to independent status in 1976. Manchester Grammar School will remain a school for boys into the modern day. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Today it is believed that being a boy is something that needs correction through drugs or draconian punishment. Thus we expel BOYS for making "guns" shaped out of Pop-Tarts®. In early education, girls excel while boys catch up later. Teen Talk Barbie says, "Math class is tough!" What is tougher is teaching boys without oppressing the egos of girls. The wrong solution is to oppress the egos of boys! Few schools dare to be wise enough to face the reality that girls and boys are different in body, mind and spirit. Separate grammar schools would allow each to learn at their own pace and later meet as equals. [6] [7] [8] [9] FYI: As an Orthodox Jew I will be discounted as attempting to impose a religious separation of boys and girls. While I am religious now, I've held this position of the separation of boys and girls in education long before I became religious.

Indian Slavery and the Failure of Free Towns

Bartolomé de Las Casas [BAR-tow-low-MAY] has witnessed (and participated in) disturbing abuses of American Indians, especially in Cuba, and accepted slaves in payment for his help, but he undergoes a conversion of the heart and becomes the first priest of the New World. He has denounced the Spanish abuse and freed his own Indian slaves. In the coming years he will be named "Protector of the Indians" and recommend that the number of African slaves be increased rather than enslave the Indians. He reasons that the Indians don't know of Jesus whereas Africans have rejected Christianity and could be enslaved. But the Indians are not idiots. They understand Christianity just fine and see no reason to change. It's going to take a while for the Christians to realize this. [10] [11] [12]

Bartolomé de Las Casas [BAR-tow-low-MAY] experimented with free towns allowing the Indians to accept Spanish/Christian rule of their own volition, but these experiments would always fail when neighboring towns would roll in, enslave the Indians and take their land whether they had converted to Christianity or not. It is often a struggle to forgive these people. Is it any wonder that a Reformation is coming? [13]

The First Founding of Havana, Cuba

Diego Velázquez was one of the people accompanying Christopher Columbus on his second voyage and helped to put down the rebellion of the Taino [TAY-no] of Hispaniola. He was selected to conquer Cuba and has been enslaving Indians left and right. This year he will found the city of Havana. This will not be the first founding. Over the years the location will move around but the name will be retained. The current location is on the south coast, probably where the city of Batabanó is located today. Present day Havana is on the north coast. [14]

Well... this is an opportunity to talk about Cuba and the establishment of relations with the Island. I've always admired the Cubans. I've met few people with more of a drive to succeed. When Cuba went communist under Fidel Castro if anyone could make communism succeed, it would be the Cubans. But they couldn't make it the worker's paradise that communism promised. The Cubans have barely made it work at all. Yet, all I hear about is the wonder of Cuba. The only wonder I can think of is how it is still holding together.
